Audi’s next-generation A5 lineup has been making waves since last year, featuring the Avant station wagon and a five-door sedan. Now, it looks like Audi is preparing to introduce the much-anticipated A5 Sportback.
A camouflaged prototype was spotted testing in Germany a few months ago, and now, thanks to digital renderings from Kolesa, we get a glimpse of what the final design might look like. These renderings appear to be quite accurate, though there may be minor tweaks before production.
The render showcases a striking front end dominated by a large grille, flanked by sleek headlights—though the actual production model may feature slightly different lighting graphics. The air vents on this digital model are quite pronounced, while the prototype had more subtle ones, so that detail may change.

From the side, the A5 Sportback maintains a dynamic stance, featuring sculpted lines along the doors, side skirts, and an arched roofline that contributes to its fastback silhouette. The door handles and side mirrors will likely be slightly different on the final model, with the latter expected to be more elongated.
At the back, the render features slim taillights connected by a light strip across the tailgate—a design cue familiar to Audi fans. The rear bumper houses the license plate, and a sporty diffuser gives the car a performance-oriented edge. The exhaust outlets match those of the prototype, while the absence of chrome accents enhances the aggressive look.
With its coupe-like profile, the A5 Sportback bears a resemblance to the larger A7 Sportback, offering a more dynamic design compared to its A5 Sedan and A5 Avant siblings. However, its market availability remains uncertain. Spy shots indicate that this prototype was seen near Audi’s Ingolstadt headquarters, but the specific camouflage suggests it may be intended primarily for the Chinese market.
While official details are scarce, the new A5 Sportback is expected to ride on Audi’s PPC (Premium Platform Combustion) architecture, shared with the rest of the lineup. Reports suggest it may forgo electrified powertrains, likely featuring a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine as its base option. Additional engine variants could be introduced, depending on whether Audi decides to sell this model globally or keep it exclusive to China.
The upcoming A5 Sportback boasts a sleek, modern design that many would love to see available worldwide. Whether it remains a China-exclusive model or reaches Western markets is still uncertain. However, one thing is clear—this new iteration of the A5 Sportback is shaping up to be a stunning addition to Audi’s lineup.
