Tesla has officially unveiled the refreshed Model Y, known as the Juniper update, in China, with orders now open across the Asia-Pacific region. While not a complete overhaul, the update brings several design and performance improvements. Here’s how the Tesla Model Y Juniper stacks up against the previous model.
Design Updates: A Cyber-Inspired Look
The refreshed Model Y adopts some design cues from Tesla’s Cybertruck and Cybercab, aligning it more with the brand’s evolving aesthetic.
- New Light Bars: The front and rear light bars are among the most noticeable updates. Tesla touts the rear as its first “indirect reflective body panel taillight,” which likely uses a light deflector to achieve a more translucent effect.
- Aerodynamic Enhancements: The new design improves aerodynamics, reducing the drag coefficient from 0.23 to 0.22. This contributes to better efficiency and range.
While the design changes may be polarizing, they serve both aesthetic and functional purposes.
Interior Upgrades: More Comfort & Features
Inside, the refreshed Model Y gains several enhancements that improve the driving and passenger experience. Many of these updates were first seen in the Model 3 refresh.
- Ambient Lighting
- Ventilated Seats
- Enhanced Audio System
- Rear Infotainment Screen
However, two features stand out:
- Turn Signal Stalk Remains – Unlike other recent Tesla models, the Model Y refresh retains the traditional turn signal stalk. The backlash from removing it in the Model 3 likely influenced this decision.
- Motorized Rear Seat Reclining – A surprising addition, given Tesla’s usual focus on simplifying components.
Other convenience upgrades include a power tailgate and a power frunk—features many Model Y owners had been requesting.
Performance & Efficiency: Better Range and Acceleration
The refreshed Model Y benefits from improved aerodynamics and, in some cases, a larger battery.
Variant | Old Model Range | New Model Range | % Increase |
---|---|---|---|
RWD | 554 km (344 mi) | 593 km (368 mi) | +7% |
AWD | 688 km (428 mi) | 719 km (447 mi) | +4.5% |
(Figures based on the optimistic Chinese CLTC standard.)
Acceleration has also improved:
- RWD Model: 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 5.9 sec (vs. 6.9 sec previously)
- AWD Model: 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in 4.3 sec (vs. 5.0 sec previously)
However, Tesla has lowered the top speed from 217 km/h (135 mph) to 201 km/h (125 mph).
Pricing & Incentives
The updated Model Y comes with a price increase of around 5% in China:
- RWD Variant: 263,500 yuan ($35,940) vs. 249,900 yuan ($34,080)
- AWD Variant: 303,500 yuan ($41,400) vs. 290,900 yuan ($39,675)
To encourage sales of the outgoing model, Tesla is offering:
- A 10,000 yuan ($1,365) discount
- 0% interest financing
Is the New Model Y Worth It?
The refreshed Model Y brings meaningful improvements in efficiency, technology, and convenience. While the price is slightly higher, the better range, improved acceleration, and added features make it a compelling upgrade. However, those looking for a deal may still find value in the discounted outgoing model.
