At this year’s Auto Shanghai, amidst a flurry of global debuts and futuristic concepts, one particular reveal has managed to grab more than a few eyeballs — the Zeekr 9X. Released ahead of its official unveiling, the luxury SUV from Zeekr (a brand under China’s Geely umbrella) showcases a daring design that unapologetically borrows cues from some of the world’s most revered SUVs.
Petrolheads might not always have Chinese vehicles on their radar, but the Zeekr 9X is set to change a few minds. Drawing heavy inspiration from the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, the 9X also exhibits design elements reminiscent of the Range Rover, the Rivian R1S, and even Zeekr’s own 009 minivan. While on paper such a mashup sounds risky, in reality, it results in a surprisingly attractive machine — sophisticated, robust, and brimming with presence.
That said, there’s still a bit of room for imagination. Some enthusiasts believe the 9X could have been even more compelling with additions like rear-hinged doors and flush-mounted door handles — features that could have further elevated its luxury appeal. One can’t help but wonder how the conversation would shift if this SUV bore the badge of a prestigious Western brand.
The buzz around the Zeekr 9X didn’t stop at its initial reveal. Digital artist Kelsonik quickly got to work, posting stunning renderings on social media. His take on the 9X emphasises a more aggressive “murdered-out” look, with black chrome accents, deeply tinted windows, and a set of striking aftermarket wheels. In fact, Kelsonik explored three different wheel designs — a multi-spoke, a wide-lip variant, and a bi-tone set — with many agreeing the multi-spoke alloys best complement the SUV’s bold lines.
Through side-by-side comparisons with the facelifted Rolls-Royce Cullinan, it’s easy to see how Zeekr is aiming high in the luxury game. And while purists might scoff, there’s no denying the 9X wears its Shadowline-inspired styling well. It’s the kind of look that future owners could easily emulate in the aftermarket scene.
Design aside, the 9X proves that Chinese brands are rapidly narrowing the gap when it comes to building desirable, premium vehicles.
