The Mazda CX-5 has long been a favorite in the non-premium compact SUV segment, thanks to its sleek design, top-tier build quality, and an impressive suite of technology and safety features. While it excels in many areas, one aspect where it falls short compared to some competitors is interior space. However, this alone isn’t the reason for its recent decline in U.S. sales.
Over the past year, the CX-5 has lagged behind key rivals, including the Ford Escape, Kia Sportage, Subaru Forester, Hyundai Tucson, Chevrolet Equinox, Nissan Rogue, Honda CR-V, and Toyota RAV4—the latter two being the undisputed sales leaders in this segment. To remain competitive, Mazda desperately needs to introduce a third-generation CX-5, as the current model, which debuted in 2016, is now outclassed by newer alternatives.

A New Generation on the Horizon
Although Mazda has yet to officially confirm the next-gen CX-5, speculation suggests that we might see a debut as early as this year. If that happens, it would likely arrive as a 2026 or 2027 model. The sooner, the better, as Mazda needs fresh competition against the segment’s best.
Design-wise, details remain scarce, but a new rendering from Kolesa imagines the 2026 CX-5 with a more mature, refined aesthetic. The concept features a bold, illuminated grille, larger headlights, flush door handles, and an overall more utilitarian stance. Interestingly, the design takes on a slightly “Honda-like” appearance—though Mazda enthusiasts will likely want the brand to maintain its distinct identity.
Bigger and Better?
One key takeaway from this rendering is that the next-generation CX-5 could be larger than its predecessor. If Mazda follows this approach, it would be a smart move, as increased dimensions could help it better compete with the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. While the current model has a suitable wheelbase and height, a longer overall body would provide much-needed improvements in rear passenger space and cargo capacity.
