Toyota hasn’t produced an MR2 since the third-generation model ended production in 2007. However, that may soon change, as rumors of a new mid-engine sports car have been gaining momentum.
In recent years, speculation about the MR2’s return has been widespread, and Toyota itself has added fuel to the fire. The company recently showcased a mid-engine prototype of the GR Yaris at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon, hinting that something bigger might be in the works.
Some sources suggest that this prototype isn’t just an experimental model but rather a test mule for the next-generation MR2. If true, the car could be powered by Toyota’s new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Interestingly, this prototype featured an all-wheel-drive system—departing from the traditional rear-wheel-drive layout of past MR2 models. While purists may be skeptical, AWD would significantly improve traction and handling, especially on track days or winding mountain roads.
Toyota appears to be aiming for an exceptionally balanced sports car, with its center of gravity positioned toward the rear axle. If executed correctly, this could result in a lightweight, agile driving machine. Reports suggest the new MR2 could produce around 400 metric horsepower (394 hp), with a lower-powered 300-hp version also in development. Additionally, a motorsport-inspired variant may push output as high as 600 hp.
The new 2.0-liter turbo engine is expected to comply with the Euro 7 emissions standards. More intriguingly, it is rumored to be compatible with multiple fuel types, potentially unlocking even more performance when using high-octane fuel.
From a design standpoint, the 2026 MR2 is anticipated to draw inspiration from Toyota’s FT-Se Concept, which was unveiled two years ago. The FT-Se’s sharp, aggressive styling in a compact, aerodynamic package set a high standard for what Toyota’s next sports car might look like.
Recently, digital artist avarvarii created a rendering of the rumored MR2, showcasing a design that some compare to a budget-friendly version of the now-discontinued BMW i8. This CGI interpretation builds on the FT-Se Concept but features a more production-ready front end, borrowing cues from existing Toyota models.
If the final design resembles this rendering, Toyota enthusiasts will likely have little to complain about.
