The Mercedes-Benz S-Class, formerly known as the Sonderklasse (“special class” in German), has long been the pinnacle of luxury sedans. While the S-Class name officially debuted in 1972 with the W116, its roots go back even further to models like the W108, the “Fintail,” and the “Ponton” from the 1950s. Spanning over seven decades, each generation has brought its own distinct design language, but few are as iconic as the W140.
Introduced in 1991, the W140 was a bridge between the classic, boxy styling of earlier models and the more aerodynamic designs that followed. No S-Class after it was quite as squared-off, though the W221 generation came close. Today, as enthusiasts and the aftermarket world continue to embrace the S-Class, digital artists have also taken an interest—reimagining classic models with modern flair.
One such project comes from CGI artist Vladimir Loktionov, who shared his stunning W140 restomod concept through Car Design World. This independent digital redesign aims to honor the legendary third-generation S-Class while integrating contemporary styling and technology.
A Modern Take on a Timeless Classic
Loktionov’s vision for the W140 keeps the essence of the original intact while updating key elements for a fresh, futuristic look. He meticulously recreated the sedan in CGI, incorporating the classic two-tone paint scheme—black on top with a gray lower section—while refining every body panel. The design now features modern glass, new body panels, sleeker mirrors, flush door handles, and even a panoramic roof.
Lighting is always a focal point in restomods, and this project is no exception. Loktionov has redesigned the headlights and taillights with advanced LED modules, giving the W140 a signature glow. The overall silhouette remains unmistakable, but subtle tweaks enhance its modern appeal. Additionally, the car sits on custom 45-spoke wheels with aero covers and transparent inserts, blending retro inspiration with futuristic aesthetics.
Power Meets Elegance
Under the digital hood, Loktionov imagines a Hot Rod-inspired engine bay, keeping things clean and minimalistic while still housing a twin-turbo V12—a nod to the high-performance spirit of classic Mercedes sedans.
Inside, the restomod concept takes cues from the latest W223 S-Class, seamlessly merging cutting-edge technology with the W140’s stately proportions. The result is a cabin that balances classic luxury with modern sophistication.
A Dream Car for Enthusiasts
This digital restomod may only exist in the world of CGI for now, but it’s a stunning tribute to one of the most revered S-Class models ever built. By blending timeless design with forward-thinking modifications, Loktionov has created a vision of what a modernized W140 could look like—one that feels both nostalgic and futuristic.
What do you think—should Mercedes take inspiration from this masterpiece and bring a real-life W140 restomod to the streets.
